Boeing takes six 787 cancellations

By Jon Ostrower

Boeing has received cancellations for six 787 aircraft from an unidentified customer.

The change in the airframer's orderbook brings the net total of 787 orders for 2010 to nine, following the finalisation of United Airlines order for 25 and Air Berlin's cancellation of 10.

Additionally, Boeing also shifted four previously unidentified 777s to FedEx, while adding two more from unidentified customers to its orderbook.

The company has received 36 net 777 orders to date in 2010, compared to 30 in 2009, while booking seven cancellations in 2010 and 10 in 2009.

Boeing has received gross orders for 136 aircraft and 28 cancellations, placing the 2010 net total to 108 aircraft.

Air India expects to take first 787 next March

By Brendan Sobie

Air India expects to begin taking delivery of new Boeing 787s at the end of next year's first quarter.

"Boeing is now offering us March 2011," Air India chairman and managing director Arvind Jadhav told ATI during a Star Alliance event in Sao Paulo.

While Air India is looking to sublease nearly half of its new Boeing 777-200LR/-300ER fleet, Jadhav says the carrier requires 787s as soon as possible because the aircraft are critical to its plans for improving its intra-Asia operation.

"The 787 is going to change the game," Jadhav says. "It is really required for our market. That's why we ordered 27."

Jadhav adds the 787 will give Air India a competitive advantage on Asian regional routes such as Delhi-Hong Kong, resulting in increased feed for its long-haul routes. "That's why we are a little unhappy in the delays of the 787," Jadhav says.

Air India's 787 deliveries have been delayed multiple times since the carrier ordered 27 Dreamliners in January 2006.

Source: 787 design flaw drives supplier freeze

By Jon Ostrower

Fixing a previously undisclosed 787 design flaw has now emerged as a contributor to Boeing's decision to freeze shipments from suppliers until early June.

Shear ties, which affix the fuselage frames to the skin of the aircraft, now require replacement or rework, after the initial design failed to take into account thermal fatigue loading of the aluminium parts.

The parts in question are located in the aft most part of the fuselage, inside sections 48 and 48 aft, which is the tail cone of the 787. Boeing discovered the problem in December of last year after it was found that repeated cooling and warming of the unpressurized Section 48 and 48 Aft would result in the shear ties pulling away from the skin of the fuselage, potentially compromising the structural integrity of the aircraft.

Boeing says the solution, which will be incorporated on all deliverable aircraft, is a combination of new thicker shear ties, while an additional programme source adds that radius fillers will be employed along side some existing shear ties.

The airframer says that the changes to the shear ties will not impact the current flight test or delivery schedules, and does not present an immediate safety of flight issue to the four flying 787s.

"It is a structural issue in that we are modifying the airplanes but once complete, the structure has full integrity and will meet all FAA requirements," says Boeing.

Rework on Airplane 23, say programme sources, has already begun in Charleston, South Carolina and will be completed in Everett, Washington, as will Airplane 24. The same changes are required for Airplanes four through 22 as well, including three of the six flight test aircraft, which will eventually be delivered. A permanent design solution is planned for introduction beginning with Airplane 55.

Section 47 and 48 are both fabricated by Boeing Charleston, formerly Vought Aircraft Industries, while Section 48 Aft is made by Korean Aerospace in South Korea.

Starting with Airplane 25, shear tie modification of the Section 48 and 48 Aft will be done in Charleston and Korea, respectively.

The 24-manufacturing day hold does not represent a new production schedule as the 787 ramp up continues, rather, the pace of deliveries will quicken as the time between rate breaks is reduced.

One programme source says the shear tie issue was an important driver for the 24-manufacturing day hold, while Boeing downplayed the issue as being on a longer list of contributing factors.

Continued part shortages and design changes were identified by Boeing as the cause of the 24-manufacturing day hold announced on 27 April that will keep structures for Airplane 23 at suppliers until early June.

While accurate, programme sources say that the stoppage can be ultimately traced to the aft fuselage shear tie replacement and rework. Holding structural sections at suppliers, particularly the aft fuselage, allows for the completion of required engineering along with significantly easier access by crews to address the rework.

Once in Everett at final assembly and delivery, the horizontal stabilizer is installed and access to the frames and shear ties in the aft fuselage becomes "extremely limited" they add.

Compared to a year ago, says Boeing VP of airplane programmes Pat Shanahan, design changes to the 787 have declined by a factor of ten or greater, though he acknowledges changes, even small ones, continue to be disruptive to the manufacturing process.

During manufacturing in Charleston, Sections 47, which is the pressurised aft passenger cabin, and Section 48 which houses the aft pressure bulkhead and horizontal stabilizer, are joined, stuffed with systems, wiring, insulation and ducting before being shipped to Everett for final assembly.

Programme sources say Boeing and Vought, which still supplies engineering support to Boeing, are blaming each other for the design oversight.

Boeing has encountered previous disruptions in 787 production from shear ties in 2007 and 2008 when a shortage of shear ties built by Boeing Winnipeg prevented structural frames from being installed, prompting a limited structural completion of assembly at the time of delivery.

INTERIORS: Qatar to launch Thales' newest IFEC system on 787s

By Mary Kirby

Qatar Airways has emerged as the launch customer for Thales' newest in-flight entertainment and connectivity (IFEC) system, after agreeing a massive deal to equip up to 60 Boeing 787s with the Inmarsat SwiftBroadband-supported solution.

Representing the next generation platform in Thales' TopSeries family, the IFEC system comes with a new passenger control that is "an intelligent touch-screen device that enables passengers to control games and IFE selections", says Thales.

Cabin connectivity is integrated with the IFE. Thales says in-fight connectivity service provider OnAir is coordinating with Qatar on the offering.

Qatar holds firm orders for 30 787 twinjets, plus 30 options.

Air France-KLM order for 100 787s/A350s is “hanging”

By Mark Pilling
Air France-KLM is committed to a major order for Boeing 787s and Airbus A350s but is growing increasingly frustrated with the airframers over their inability to provide certainty around the projects.

"The manufacturers are not willing to give us fixed dates and [aircraft] specifications," Peter Hartman, president of KLM told ATI and Flightglobal at the group's annual results press conference.

The group has sent a request for proposals for 100 aircraft to each manufacturer for deliveries that it requires from 2014 but this is "hanging", says Hartman.
"We need them in 2014. As soon as positions [are confirmed] we will start ordering." He is hoping for more certainty from the airframers by the end of the year.

Air France-KLM requires the mid-size widebodies to replace A340s and the oldest 747s at Air France and MD-11s at KLM, says Hartman. "The order will most likely be a mix of the two aircraft [the 787 and A350]," he says, with the first deliveries having to be leased.

KLM had secured delivery positions for 787s from the Royal Bank of Scotland but when this bank pulled out of the leasing market last year it lost those aircraft, says Hartman. The group remains active in the leasing market looking for 787s, he adds.

Muchas gracias xplan303ex!

Even when the window is fully dark, passengers will be able to see the world passing by.
When an electric current is applied to the gel, it causes a chemical reaction and it begins to darken.
From a computer panel, the crew can control an individual window, a section or all of the windows.
Sean Sullivan and his team are trying to anticipate issues that might arise once the planes are in commercial service.
such as adding flight data to automate the windows.

Boeing resumes 787 structural deliveries

By Jon Ostrower
Boeing has restarted 787 final assembly following a 24-manfacturing-day hold on deliveries of aircraft structure to final assembly.

Deliveries to the company's Everett, Washington, facility resumed on 6 June with the arrival of the aft fuselage section for Airplane 23, destined for Japan Airlines, as well as the horizontal stabiliser for Airplane 25, the first 787 to be built for Air India.

The forward fuselage from Spirit AeroSystems is expected to be delivered on 9 June, and centre fuselage from Boeing Charleston the following day.

Boeing halted deliveries on 27 April to allow its supply chain to catch up following part shortages and design changes, including a modification and re-work of aluminium shear ties in the unpressurised parts of the aft fuselage.

Before deliveries were halted in April, Boeing was taking delivery to final assembly of roughly two new airframes per month, that pace is expected to continue with the arrival of the latest sections. In the interim, the airframer continued work on the 16 production aircraft already in Everett.

First delivery is slated for November or December to launch customer All Nippon Airways.

Programme sources say the airframer hopes to be at around three 787s per month by September and just over 3.5 by the end of first quarter 2011.

Boeing will continue its march to ramping 787 production to 10 aircraft per month by 2013, with first delivery from the company's new North Charleston, South Carolina, line expected in the first quarter of 2012.

ANA targets first 787 commercial flight in January 2011

By Ghim-Lay Yeo
Launch customer All Nippon Airways aims to begin Boeing 787 commercial services on its Japanese domestic network as early as January, following delivery late this year.

"We hope to receive the aircraft in November or December, and operate the first commercial flight to a domestic destination a month after that," says ANA.

The aircraft will enter service on international routes when the carrier's 2011 summer schedule begins at the end of March, it adds.

Potential international destinations include Beijing and Shanghai, as well as US West Coast cities and Europe.

ANA expects to receive a total of eight 787-8s by the end of its current fiscal year ending 31 March 2011.
